Oklahoma HVAC companies are experiencing a surge in service calls as the winter storm brings freezing temperatures to the region, with technicians offering advice to homeowners on how to prevent common issues like burnt-out furnaces and frozen pipes.
Technicians report that call volumes have increased by 75 to 100 percent, mirroring the busy summer season. With more freezing temperatures expected this weekend, HVAC professionals are booked solid.
“We had a lot of customers calling maybe right before, right as it was hitting, and during the storm,” said Justin Dirks, vice president of ASAP Heating and Air.
Despite proactive measures by homeowners, issues can still arise.
“Oklahoma homes were not built to sustain these types of temperatures over a long period of time,” said Will Yarbrough, general manager of Yarbrough and Sons Heating, Cooling and Plumbing.
The most common issues reported include burnt-out furnaces and frozen pipes.
“A lot of heaters were put through stress they are not used to experiencing,” Yarbrough said.
“Frozen drains are probably the majority of our calls,” Dirks said.
With freezing temperatures in the forecast again this weekend, HVAC experts offer advice to keep systems running smoothly.
They recommend maintaining the heat at least 68 to 70 degrees and advise against turning off the furnace or relying solely on a fireplace for heating.
