Repair or Replace Your AC? Why More Florida Homeowners Are Choosing Repair

If your AC is acting up, a full replacement isn’t automatically the answer anymore. For almost ten years, homeowners who had trouble with an aging system usually swapped it out. That changed in 2025.
Across the country, sales of new home HVAC equipment fell an estimated 20 to 40 percent last year at nearly every major manufacturer. Industry analysts don’t think it’s a temporary dip. More and more homeowners are choosing to repair the system they have instead of buying a new one, and the reasons behind that shift aren’t going away soon.
Here at Boykin Air, we think that’s worth explaining plainly. Here’s what changed, what it means for your wallet, and how to make the right call for your home.
Why a new system costs so much more now
A few rule changes and market pressures hit at the same time. Together, they turned what used to be a single-part swap into a whole-system job.
- New refrigerants. New equipment now runs on lower-impact A2L refrigerants. They’re mildly flammable, so the units need extra safety components, and that raises the price.
- Higher efficiency standards (SEER2). Combined with the refrigerant change, you usually can’t replace just half of a split system anymore. If the outdoor condenser on a 2010 system fails, the indoor air handler typically has to be replaced too. That can nearly double the bill.
- Warranties cover less than you’d think. A warranty may pay for a new condenser, but not the new air handler and line set that a compatible system requires. Homeowners can still face a bill around $10,000 on a system that’s technically under warranty.
- Financing is more expensive. Higher interest rates and stricter lending make it harder to spread the cost out.
- Tariffs and fewer rebates. Equipment prices have also climbed with tariffs, while some rebates that used to soften the cost have been cut.
The gap is big. A typical repair runs a few hundred dollars, while a full replacement often lands between $11,000 and $20,000.
What this means for you
For many homeowners, a skilled repair is now the smartest financial move. Industry experts expect repairs and maintenance to make up a bigger share of HVAC work for at least the next three to five years.
That doesn’t mean every system should be patched forever. A good repair or retrofit can restore efficiency and add years of life to equipment that still has plenty to give. The key is knowing which situation you’re in.
Repair or retrofit usually makes sense when:
- The problem is a single failed part, like a capacitor, motor, or control board
- The rest of the system is in solid shape and cools your home evenly
- A retrofit can improve efficiency at a fraction of the cost of new equipment
Replacement may be the better call when:
- Major components are failing repeatedly or the system is near the end of its life
- Repair costs are climbing year after year
- Your energy bills keep rising even after service
- The system can no longer keep up with a Central Florida summer
In our climate, your AC works harder and longer than in most of the country. Regular maintenance is the easiest way to catch small problems before they turn into a five-figure decision.
How Boykin Air helps you decide
For years, a lot of the industry trained technicians to steer customers toward new equipment. We don’t work that way. As a locally owned company, our name is on every job, and our goal is the right fix for your home, not the biggest ticket.
When you call Boykin Air, you can expect:
- An honest diagnosis. We find the real cause of the problem and explain it in plain language.
- Clear options with upfront pricing. We’ll lay out repair, retrofit, and replacement side by side so you can compare.
- Repairs done right the first time. Our technicians focus on careful troubleshooting so you’re not calling us back next week.
- Straight talk on replacement. If your system truly is at the end of the road, we’ll tell you why and help you choose a system that fits your home and budget.
- Maintenance that protects your investment. A maintenance plan keeps your system running efficiently and helps you avoid surprise breakdowns in the middle of summer.
